Department of Glaucoma and Lens Pathology

Organization of a new division in 1999 – Microsurgery of Cataract – was one of the most important steps in the development of the Institute.
The founder and the first head of the division was professor Ivan Logai.
September 1, 2013 was the day of the alliance of 2 divisions: Microsurgery of Cataract and Glaucoma. Thus a new department of the Institute appeared – Department of Glaucoma and Lens Pathology.
The first head of the department became DMedSc – Sergij Dmytriev.
The Department focuses on:
- wide usage of femtosecond laser in phacoemulsification, including the most complicated cases;
- usage of special navigation devices (the system “Verion”, the phacomachine “Centurion”) which provide standardization of main stages of operation and achievement of maximum optical results;
- usage of modern methods of microinvasive glaucoma surgery with application of microincision and usage of the special equipment and technologies (EX-PRESS Tube, the system «Trabectome», non-penetrating deep sclerectomy by Fedorov-Kozlov);
- developing new approaches of excision of the most serious lens pathology: superdense cores and dislocation of the lens;
- treatment algorithm for patients with cataract, complicated with pseudo-exfoliation syndrome and astigmatism is created;
- developing indicators for cataract extraction in patients with various retinal diseases, improving main operation’s stages;
- studying on ergonomics in patients with intraocular artificial lens;
- a concept of pathogenesis of glaucoma was created, on the basis of which highly effective methods of antihypertensive treatment were developed and introduced into clinical practice;
- combined surgeries: antiglaucomatous operations with cataract phacoemulsification and implantation of various models of IOL;
- treatment of secondary glaucoma with Ahmed implant and drain tubes;
- rational schemes of preserving treatment of various forms of glaucoma and glaucomatous optic neuropathy;
- treatment of ophthalmic complications of diabetes.

Clinical work is at the Division of Microsurgery of Glaucoma and Lens.
Head of the division:
Kateryna Kovaleva, ophthalmologist of high category.

Operations are performed using up-to-date surgical techniques to remove cataract and glaucoma of various forms at the Division.
- The Division has modern and professional equipment: systems «Infinity» Alcon, «Centurion» Alcon, «Stellaris» Bausch & Lomb, also operational systems «Trabectome» Neomedix and «LenSx Laser» Alcon.
- Great clinical experience of specialists of the Division and high level of diagnostic equipment (endothelial microscopy, light and ultrasonic biometry, topographic keratometry, OCT) enable to recommend the most optimal model and effect of artificial lens for each patient.
- The Division is the center of implantations of the most modern premium artificial lenses which enable to recover the maximum vision in patients with astigmatism and to provide both near and distance vision without using glasses.
- If there are shifts of an artificial crystalline humor in an eye or wrong selection of its optical power, the division uses operations directed to its replacement or additional fixing to eye tissues.
- The Division treats many cataract patients with comorbid conditions: retinal degeneration, cataracts of various etiologies, uveitis, intraocular tumors and glaucoma. Presence of specialists in different fields gives the opportunity to provide professional services to different cataract patients.
- Modern treatment of glaucoma patients is of great importance. The Division provides diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma of various forms using the newest exclusive techniques of laser non-surgical treatment and modern methods of conservative prevention using up-to-date medication.
- The Division provides antiglaucomatous operations using the device «Express Tube» that allowed to carry out successfully treatment of patients with glaucoma with high figures of intraocular pressure.
- Combined operations (phacoemulsification +antiglaucomatous operations) in patients with cataract and glaucoma are widely applied. This allows to provide the one-stage effective medical help if there are two diseases.
- The Division started to use, for the first time in Eastern Europe, the technique of trabeculectomy using the operating system «Trabectome». This technique allows performing effectively an antiglaucomatous operation at microincision 1.7 mm without section of conjunctiva and sclera, after earlier performed antiglaucomatous operations that increased quality of treatment of glaucoma patients.
- Methods of anaesthesis, developed and introduced into clinical practice of the Division, allow without pain, quickly and qualitatively to recover lost sight. The Division has wards with increased comfort.
