Department of Pathology of Retina and Vitreous Body

The Department Pathology of the Cornea and the Vitreous Body is the biggest centre for surgical and laser treatment of pathology of anterior segment of the eye in the Eastern Europe.

It is Ukraine’s leading centre for retinal detachment surgery, diabetic retinopathy, macular detachments, age-related macular degenerations, vascular pathology of the eye, retinopathy of premature, intraocular tumors and other pathology demanding both intravitreal and extraocular approaches of treatment.

The Department includes the Division of Vitreoretinal Microsurgery.

The department was created in 1964 on the initiative and under the leadership of DMedSc Volodymyr Shevalev.

Currently, the department is headed by Mykola Umanets, prof., DMedSc, ophthalmologist of higher category, senior researcher.

Scientific achievements of the department.

For the first time in the world, a number of unique methods of treatment of patients with the most severe pathology of the posterior segment of the eye have been developed and successfully used as follows:

  • a technique of internal gas tamponade of vitreous cavity (unparalleled anywhere in the world);
  • a unique technique of epiretinal membrane removal;
  • treatment for post operative haemophthalmos with replacement gas tamponade;
  • treatment for submacular hemorrhage and the fovea of the optic nerve;
  • differentiated treatment for macular detachments;
  • new methods of neuroretinoprotection;
  • original technique of high-frequency electric welding of biological tissues for retinopexy and hemostasis.

Many other methods have been developed that have significantly increased the effectiveness of treating patients with diseases of the posterior segment of the eye. Research work is underway to develop new treatments for complicated forms of retinal regmatogenic detachment at the stages of far-reaching proliferative diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema and others.

Clinical work is carried out in the Division of Vitreoretinal Microsurgery.

Clinical studies of the division.

In the treatment process, all the accumulated world experience in the treatment of patients with the most severe pathology of the posterior segment of the eye is successfully used, as well as our own methods developed in the division:

  • treatment for macular detachment;
  • treatment for regmatogenic retinal detachment with differentiated gas tamponades into vitreous cavity;
  • treatment for proliferative diabetic retinopathy with new epiretinal membrane removal;
  • surgery for retinal detachment with temporary keratoprosthesis;
  • endoresection of intraocular tumors using high-frequency electric welding of biological tissues.

Highly experienced specialists, strong material and technical base allows the division to take priority positions in all areas of vitreoretinal surgery and return vision to thousands of patients who have recently been doomed to complete blindness.
