Department of Studying Biological Action and Application of Lasers in Ophthalmology

Leonid Linnyk, for the first time in the world, performed successful laser coagulation of human retina at the Filatov Institute in 1963.
He headed organized laser scientific clinical division and the engineering group of 22 people in 1973.
The Department includes the Division of Laser Microsurgery of Eye Diseases.
The department is headed by Andrii Korol, DMedSc, Senior Research Scientist, ophthalmologist of higher category
Achievements of the Department include:
- developed construction and serial production of domestic ophthalmic coagulators (OK-2, “Kolir”, “Liman”). Specialists were awarded S. Vavilov’s Prize for these developments;
- introduced into practice: original methods of laser therapy, determined stimulating effect of low-energy laser on retinal functions, that was the basis of treatment of dystrophic diseases;
- studied, for the first time in the USSR, mechanisms of ultrasonic effect on the visual organ, developed new methods of ultrasonic and magnetotherapy, phonophoresis and magnetophoresis of medicaments when many eye diseases; improved methods of ultrasonic diagnosis of eye pathology;
- new devices for ophthalmic application were proposed.
The main activities of the department are:
- Development and implementation of methods of diagnosis (in particular, such as longwave fundusgraphy and infrared diaphanoscopy) and treatment of eye fundus pathology.
- Diagnosis, laser surgery and therapy for diseases of anterior and posterior segments of the eye.
- Studying of biological action of lasers in ophthalmology and their application.
- Development and implementation of treatment methods for age-related macular degeneration.
- Organization and conducting clinical trials of ophthalmic preparations in the clinics of the Institute.
- Teaching others of laser methods for treatment of the posterior segment of the eye.

The Division of Laser Microsurgery of Eye Disease is on the basis of the department.

Work in the division focuses on:
- Diabetic retinopathy. The Division uses up-to-date diagnostic methods (fluorescein angiography, optical coherence tomography) enabling to diagnose pathological processes of eye fundus structures in time as well as to start medical and laser treatment. Besides, intravitreal injections of gemasa causing hemophthalmia (vitreous hemorrhage) resorption are used.
- Age-related macular degeneration is the disease of the central part of the retina causing the central vision loss. Modern techniques (fluorescein angiography, optical coherence tomography, longwave fundusgraphy) are used to diagnose and control the treatment. Pathogenetic treatment of degenerative diseases of the macula and posterior segment of the eye is carried out. Specialists use world accepted methods of treatment such as intravitreal injection of VEGF inhibitors (Lucentis, Aylie), intravitreal and subtenon injection of triamcinolone acetonide.
- Choroidal melanoma is malignant neoplasm of the choroid. The Division provides refining the diagnosis and differentiating diagnosing tumors of the choroid, iris and ciliary body. Organ-preserving treatment is carried out by using transpupillary thermotherapy.
- Retinal vein thrombosis is a complication of hypertension consisting in ceiling the vessel lumen thrombus that causes acute circulatory problems and retinal vascular ischemia. The Division uses up-to-date drug and laser therapies to treat this pathology.
- Myopia especially one of a high degree, is often accompanied by pathological changes of the retina (peripheral retinal degeneration, retinal ruptures, development of subretinal neovascular membranes). Division’s specialists are able to identify and to perform timely the necessary treatment to prevent more serious complications (retinal detachment, loss of central vision).
