Department of Functional and Diagnostic Study

The Laboratory of Functional Methods of Research of the Eye was founded as Filatov Research Institute of Eye Diseases on the 1st of January 1948.
The first head of the laboratory (from 1948 to 1963) was Cand. of Med. Sc. Ya. Przhbilska; from 1965 to 1989. – the department was headed by DMedSc, professor A. Novokhatsky.
In 1975, the laboratory included a group of electrophysiology of the visual organ, which was headed by DMedSc V. Russev until 1986.
From 1989 to 2023 – the department was headed by DMedSc, professor V. Ponomarchuk.
Main directions of scientific research:
● Neuroophthalmology (including vegetoophthalmology);
● Development and clinical application of ophthalmic electronic, photo and myostimulators as “Phosphen” for diagnostics and treatment of diseases of the optic nerve, retina, and ocularmotor apparatus;
● Diagnostics of color vision;
● Study of blood and brain circulation;
● Ophthalmic ergonomic studies.
There is a wide range of electrophysiological and psychophysical studies of the eye using high-technology equipment of Ukraine’s and world manufacturers including electrophysiological system (Roland Consult, Germany), Humphrey field analyzer (Carl Zeiss, Germany), computer system for blood and brain circulation “Reokom” (Kharkiv, Ukraine) etc.
Main directions of the practical work:
Diagnostics of functional disorders of visual analyzer in inflammatory, dystrophic and degenerative etiologies on the basis of the set of functional and diagnostic methods including:
● Complex of electrophysiological tests (electroretinography (ERG), visual evoked potentials (VEP), determination of objective visual acuity, threshold of electrical sensitivity and lability by phosphene);
● Visual field study (automatic computer perimetry on Humphrey field analyzer, Goldman perimetry, campimetry)
● Complex testing color vision (polychromatic tables, anomaloscope) and examination of its anomalies;
● Visual analyzer light sensitivity study (adaptometry);
● Ultrasound of the eye;
● Examination of blood circulation of the eye and brain (rheoophthalmo- and rheoencephalography);
● Determination of functional activity of the oculomotor apparatus on the photomyostimulator PMS-1 developed device in the department.
In addition to diagnostic work, the department carries out electro- and photostimulating treatment of dystrophic and inflammatory lesions of the optic nerve, retina, functional disorders when refraction abnormalities, accommodation spasms, amblyopia, cortical disorders. Treatment is carried out with the help of developed and tested in the department of medical devices – electrical, photo- and myostimulators.
