It is the leading scientific, medical, diagnostic and organizational center in Ukraine and Eastern Europe for the most severe hereditary and acquired pathologies of the organs of vision in children of different ages (from newborns to adolescents).
The department includes:
- The Division of Microsurgical Treatment of Children’s Ophthalmological Diseases
- The Center for Pediatric Ophthalmology of Ukraine.
Currently, the department is headed by Nadiia Bobrova, DMedSc, prof., Honored Science and Technology Figure of Ukraine, ophthalmologist of higher categor
The main activities of the department are:
- For the first time in Ukraine, a folding intraocular lens was implanted in young children with lens subluxation (Marfan’s syndrome).
- For 60 years, methods for corneal transplantation, anti-glaucomatous surgeries for congenital glaucoma have been developing.
- Reconstructive surgery of the anterior segment of the eye is performed according to an original technique that allows restoring vision in the most severe injuries in children.
- A wealth of experience has been accumulated in the field of plastic surgery for eyelid pathology (ptosis, blepharofimosis syndrome), congenital and acquired diseases of the orbit, lacrimal ducts using original, highly effective techniques developed in the department.
- Scleroplasty, closed vitrectomy, endolaser coagulation and endodiathermy, cryopexy, gas expansion are effective when treat retinal detachment and pathology of the posterior segment of the eye.
- Modern and highly informative methods of examination (MRI, spiral CT, Doppler, etc.) of patients with various tumors are used. This allows to make a diagnosis with maximum accuracy and choose the optimal tactics of surgical or conservative treatment.
- Organ-preserving treatment of retinoblastoma has been developed and is being applied.
- Successful conservative therapy is carried out in case of inflammatory conditions of the eyeball, both by medical and hardware methods.

Clinical work is carried out on the basis of the department by:
- The Division of Microsurgical Treatment of Eye Diseases in Children
- The Center for Pediatric Ophthalmology of Ukraine

Original methods of surgical and conservative treatment of the most severe congenital and acquired eye pathology are used in clinical practice:
- Artificial lens implantation in infants enabling the normal sight formation to little patients
- Surgical treatment for complicated lens pathology: subluxation in Marfan’s syndrome, lenticonus, microspheres fakia
- Reconstructive surgery for post traumatic pathology of the anterior segment of the eye enabling to recover the lost vision and possibility of normal studying and social adopting
- Corneal transplantation in its congenital and acquired pathology
- Surgical treatment for congenital glaucoma
- Combined poly chemotherapy in retinoblastoma treatment: when local – intravitreal injection of cytostatic; when total – chemo reduction. It led to increasing the effectiveness of organ-preserving treatment and avoided enucleating the tumor eye
- Surgeries for tumors of the orbit and ocular adnexa – hemangioma, dermoid cysts
- Plastic ophthalmic surgery while correcting various congenital ptoses of the upper eyelid, blepharophimosis syndrome, and other congenital and acquired eyelid pathologies, achieving cosmetic and functional results
- Restoration of the patency of lacrimal ducts in ifants
- Conservative treatment of congenital retinal and cornea dystrophy, optic nerve atrophy, inflammatory conditions with modern highly effective drugs and devices that improve visual functions.
It is the leading scientific, medical, diagnostic and organizational center in Ukraine and Eastern Europe for the most severe congenital and acquired eye diseases in children of different ages (from newborns to adolescents). More than 2000 operations are performed annually. It occupies a leading position in the surgery of congenital, traumatic, uveal and other cataracts in children (phacoemulsification, microcut lensectomy, implantation of various IOLs).
