Departments and divisions

Department of Ophthalmooncology

The only medical, scientific and organizational center in Ukraine that deals with oncological diseases of the eye.

The department includes the Division of Microsurgical Treatment of Ocular Tumors.

The Department of Ophthalmooncology was founded by academician N. Puchkivska in 1961.

Now the department is headed by Anatolii Maletskii, DMedSc, Leading Research Scientist, ophthalmologist of higher category.

The department conducts research work on determining the role of cellular and humoral immune mechanisms in the implementation of the therapeutic effect when using organ-saving methods of treating patients with melanocytic neoplasms of the uveal tract of the eye, eyelids, conjunctiva and soft-tissue tumors of the orbit and optimizing the tactics of their treatment.

Employees of the department are working on:

  • Creation of original devices and tools for operations in the orbit, eyeball and its adnexa together with E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute;

Employees of the Department have developed and implemented new methods of ocular tumors’ diagnosis and treatment:

  • selective intra-arterial chemotherapy in complex organ-preserving treatment of intraocular melanoma;
  • differential infrared pyrometer for medical diagnosis;
  • new methods of formation locomotor stump after enucleation of an eye;
  • usage of adjuvant interferon therapy during organ-preserving treatment (photoenergy, brachytherapy) of patients with ocular melanoma;
  • usage of selective intra-arterial chemotherapy in combination with radiotherapy when malignant tumors of the orbit;
  • usage of markers of early and late lymphocyte activation in uveal melanoma patients when organ-preserving treatment;
  • usage of radiowave surgery during treatment of melanomas of iridociliary zone and choroid;
  • usage of transscleral, transpupillar thermotherapy and laser coagulation of melanoma of uveal tract;
  • usage of an electron beam during organ-preserving treatment of intraocular melanoma;
  • method of diagnosing the nature of neoplastic process in the lacrimal gland;
  • method of differential diagnostics of the nature of the lacrimal gland tumor using a set of monoclonal antibodies СD 16, СD 25, СD 95, СD 7, СD 38, СD 45, СD 150;
  • method of conjunctival dacryocystorhinostomy (lacocystorhinostomy) in patients with obliteration of tear ducts and nasolacrimal duct as the result of inflammation or injury;
  • method of predicting the recurrence of lacrimal gland tumors with the help of tumor markers СА-19-9 and PEA;
  • method of predicting the recurrence of epithelial neoplasm of lacrimal gland using a set of monoclonal antibodies СD 16, СD 25, СD 95;
  • method of endovitreal resection of uveal melanoma using high-friquency electrical welding of biological tissue;
  • method of enucleation of the eyeball regarding uveal melanoma using high-friquency electrical welding of biological tissue;
  • polymer composite material for replacing soft and osseous structures.

Every year, about 1,500 patients with severe cancer, lacrimal tract pathology, endocrine ophthalmopathy, productive processes of orbital tissues, post-traumatic deformations of the walls of the orbit, eyelids, conjunctival cavity, enophthalmos, subatrophy of the eyeball, etc.

The Division of Microsurgical Treatment of Ocular Tumors is on the basis of the department.

New methods of diagnosis and treatment of ocular tumors are used at the Division:

  • organ-preserving treatment of an eye, its adnexa and orbit: usage of transscleral, transpupillar thermotherapy and laser coagulation of uveal tract melanomas;
  • selective chemotherapy of melanomas and orbit;
  • treatment of pseudo tumors of the orbit;
  • treatment of thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy;
  • restorative operative therapy on the eyelids, orbit and orbital area after severe injuries or cancer;
  • restorative of patency of lacrimal ducts.

Laser techniques (transscleral and transpupillar thermotherapy, laser and photocoagulation), radio-wave surgery, radiotherapy (brachytherapy, teleamatherapy), cryotherapy and hyperthermia, immune therapy and selective intraarterial chemotherapy are widely used in the treatment.
