Microbiology Group of Sanitary and Epidemiological Department

The Microbiology Laboratory of the Department of Infection Control was established in 1936 as a diagnostic, research and organizational center for the study of problems in the diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory eye diseases.

The activity of the laboratory is carried out in two directions: clinical and sanitary-bacteriological studies.

Head of infection control department: Alla Moloda, bacteriologist of higher category.

  • Studies of conjunctival secretions, corneal scraps, intraocular media and the content of the anterior segment of the eye, vitreous body, foreign bodies extracted from the eye, the content of open wounds, airways, genitals, urine, blood, material during autopsy are carried out. Also, the definition of antibiotics, etc.
  • These studies are aimed at objectifying the diagnosis and clarifying the stage of the infectious inflammatory process (acute, chronic), isolation and identification of species belonging to determine the concentration of each type of microorganisms that obseminate samples of clinical material in a monoculture or as part of an association, as well as determining the sensitivity of isolated microorganisms to antibiotics, and when isolating fungi – to anti-fungicides. Accurate identification of the pathogen and determination of its sensitivity to antibiotics allows you to quickly stop the disease, thereby preventing the development of chronic forms.
  • On the basis of researches, an individual treatment plan for each patient is developed, which includes microbiological control at different stages of the process.

Current microbiological control of compliance with the sanitary and anti-epidemic regime in the hospital (flushing from the epidemic risk of objects of the ophthalmic hospital and operating rooms, sterility of medical supplies, bacteriological control of the efficiency of processing the surgical field and hands of surgeons, research on sterility of drugs). Monitoring studies of postoperative wounds in order to identify hospital strains of microorganisms and prevent hospital-acquired infections.
