State Institution ‘The Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of NAMS of Ukraine‘

Laboratories

Laboratory of Binocular Vision Disorders

It is a treating, diagnostic, scientific, organizational and methodic center on current problems of refractive errors’ genesis, amblyopia and disorders of oculomotor apparatus.

The Laboratory was founded under the guidance of professor Iryna Kliuka in 1977.

Main directions of scientific and practical work:

●  Diagnosing refractive errors, glasses (differing degrees) fitting (spherical, spherical-cylindrical, prismatic, spherical-cylindrical-prismatic);

●  Diagnosing and treating disorders of accommodative convergence and pupil system (including computer vision syndrome);

●  Treating progressive myopia;

●  Diagnosing accommodative convergence and pupil system errors using computer pupillography;

●  Diagnosing and treatment (conservative and operative) of different types of strabismus;

●  Treatment of complex oculomotor disorders: paralytic, vertical strabismus, complex oculomotor congenital syndromes, strabismus in children with cerebral palsy, nystagmus (involuntary eye movements);

●  Diagnosing and treatment of different types of amblyopia (reduced vision without visible changes of fundus of the eye);

●  Studying the state of the retina when anomalies of refraction and amblyopia using OCT;

●  Studying temporary parameters of visual acuity (speed of visual perception) in norm, in visual loading, in anomalies of refraction and strabismus;

●  Usage of prismatic correction in various types of ophthalmopathology;

●  Diagnosis of sensory and ocularmotor apparatus in premature infants;

●  Modern methods of diagnostics and treatment of various types of amblyopia;

●  Diagnosis and treatment of congenital myopia.

The Laboratory has developed and implemented:

●  Pleopto-orthoptic treatment of amblyopia and strabismus using modified methods, treatment of disorders of the accommodative and convergence system;

●  Domestic pupillograph for studying accommodation-convergence and pupil system, vegetative innervations of the vision analyzer;

●  Computer tests for studying binocular, stereoscopic vision and functions of oculomotor apparatus;

●  Method of electric stimulation using the device “Etrans” for treatment of iridocyclospasm;

●  Ergonomic methods for studying effect of physical and visual activity on the state of the eye;

●  Surgical treatment of complex oculomotor disorders (congenital, vertical, paralytic strabismus, cyclotropia, nystagmus);

●  New methods of surgical treatment of A, V, X syndromes were proposed;

●  Diagnostic, immunological and biochemical criteria of myopia progression;

●  Surgical methods of strengthening the sclera when progressive myopia using synthetic bioinert “Texplant” in the combination with proteolytic enzyme.

The Orthoptic Department

The laboratory also includes the Orthoptic Department,

whose employees conduct pre-assessment of patients with refraction abnormalities, strabismus, amblyopia, nystagmus. After the examination, patients are referred to consultants – employees of the Laboratory of Binocular Vision Disorder, who prescribe appropriate conservative or operative treatment.
