Laboratory of Biochemistry

The laboratory carries out researches on improving the treatment methods and developing new ones for age-related, degenerative and inflammatory eye diseases.

It also provides experimental clinical and biochemical investigations for such eye conditions as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, stromal dystrophy of the cornea and recurrent corneal erosion, herpetic keratitis, eye burns, uveitis, myopia, cataract and glaucoma.

  • For many years, employees, because of various pathological conditions of the anterior and posterior segments of the eye, investigate the glutathione reductive metabolism system, hexose phosphate shunt, the activity of enzymes for the regeneration of the oxidized form of glutathione and the reduction of damaged proteins, the activity of mitochondrial enzymes and the state of lysosome membranes, the activity of enzymes of the anti-radical and detoxification system, as well as biochemicalmechanisms of action of drugs.
  • Reduced activity of enzymatic antioxidant system, intensification of lipid peroxidation processes and impaired glutathionic status in degenerative and inflammatory diseases of the eye.
  • The role of structural and functional state of membranes of intracellular organelles and imbalance in the protein-inhibitory system of eye tissues in the development of a number of pathologies of the organ of vision is shown.
  • Important role of glutathione amino acids, metabolic status of vitamins and coenzymes has been established in increasing the potential of antiradical protection of eye tissues and in the body as a whole.
  • A study was conducted to study the mechanisms of action of laser radiation on the retina.
  • The clinical and experimental justification for the use of a number of drugs that stabilize metabolic processes, protein and membrane components of tissues in various pathological conditions of the anterior and posterior segments of the eye is shown.
  • In addition, one of the new directions in the development and experimental research of the biochemistry laboratory is to obtain a collagen module of corneal tissue from the human and swine cornea of enucleated eyes. Experiments are carried out on animals related to the study of the survival of implants. In parallel, work is underway to create an artificial cornea from human recombinant and swine collagen.
  • The laboratory is studying the pathogenetic mechanisms of a probable reduction in the progression of diabetic changes in the retina when high myopia, as well as the effect of diabetes on the structural parameters of the eyeball. Key links of pathogenetic metabolic mechanisms of formation of diabetic changes on the retina and features of structural and functional disorders in diabetes in conditions of high myopia have been studied.

To carry out high-quality research work of PhD applicants, the laboratory of biochemistry has an appropriate material and technical base: it is equipped with the necessary modern equipment and equipment that allow research of molecular and cellular bases in the study of new means of treatment of age, degenerative and inflammatory diseases of the eye.
