Structure of the Institute

Scientific Library

The scientific library of the Filatov Institute was founded in 1946. First books and journals were donated by Volodymyr Filatov. At the moment, the library has monographs, scientific journals, dissertations and author’s referrals, methodological recommendations.

The library of the institute is a significant specialized information, cultural and scientific center, helps to introduce advanced achievements of medical science in the practice of health care, promptly ensures the implementation of planned research topics and dissertations on ophthalmology.

Formed during the 70s,the specialized branch book fund of the library has great scientific value and more than 47,000 copies, including 595 dissertations, 2,400 author’s referrals, 100 titles of domestic and foreign periodicals from 1884 to today.

Libraries’ funds carefully preserved and are of great importance to the national cultural heritage: rare publications on ophthalmology by M. Averbakh, S. Golovin, L. Bellarminova, academician V. Filatov.

Of scientific value are encyclopedias, reference books, dictionaries, atlases: “Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary” (since 1890), “Great Medical Encyclopedia” 1st edition (1928), 14th volume manual “System of Ophthalmology,” St. Duke-Elder, from 1958 to 1972, “Klinische MBL für Augenheilk” since 1910, journal “Herald of Ophthalmology” since 1884.

A significant part of library resources are periodic domestic and foreign publications, in particular, “The Journal of Opthalmology” since 1946.

Library’s scientific resources are reflected in many aspects by a system of catalogs (alphabetical, subject and systematic), file books of periodicals and foreign publications, personalities and new once.

Priority and potentially innovative areas of work of the library are the optimization of the use of library funds on various media, the introduction of automation and computerization, the active use of modern databases and the Internet, the purchase of electronic documents and materials. The scientific library is equipped with two computers, a printer, a copier, connected to the Internet.

Today librarians are using new technologies and additional services, operational bibliographic provide targeted medical research work. Every year, more than 1,000 users of different categories are served (employees of the institute, ophthalmologists of other cities and regions of Ukraine, as well as ophthalmologists from near and far abroad), which issue more than 5,000 copies of documents on the pathology of the human visual system, microsurgery, plastic surgery, etc.

The library is open every day from 9:00 to 17:00 (Monday-Friday),

Reading Room – from 9.00 to 15.00. (Monday-Friday).
