SMART HABITS FOR TECH-SAVVY KIDS
Remember, you don’t have to forbid your kids from using gadgets to keep their eyesight good. You can make your kids happy and healthy by using modern technologies! Try using smart apps instead of games, such as fitness trackers, or online programs for training mindfulness or concentration.
Modern technologies are not so bad - they are still an excellent tool when it comes to monitoring our health. In addition, we, as parents, can do a lot to help our children: from setting temporary limits and organizing alternative physical activities according to the child’s age to providing appropriate useful rules:
- Increase the time of physical activity in the fresh air. Experts from Singapore recommend that younger children spend an average of three hours a day outdoors to protect them from myopia.
- Reduce the time spent on portable devices or computers without necessity. Think about setting limits to avoid arguments when it’s time to stop.
- Take five-minute breaks for your eyes after every 30-40 minutes of using the device. The eye is most relaxed when it focuses at a distance of about 6 meters. It has been found that greenery is especially soothing. Children can also close their eyes or use eye drops if needed.
- Organize an ergonomic workplace according to the child’s age and height:
- The computer screen should be at eye level or slightly lower. The main source of light (such as a window) should not shine directly into the child’s face or on the screen.
- The keyboard should be at a height that allows the child’s forearms to be approximately parallel to the floor. The elbows should rest comfortably on the sides. Use an ergonomic chair that allows the child’s spine to maintain its natural curve.
- The feet should rest on the floor (you can use a footrest). The mouse should be placed as close as possible to the keyboard, at the same level as described for the keyboard, so that the wrists and hands are positioned naturally. Use the whole hand with the mouse, not just the wrist.
- Make sure your child gets enough sleep at night. Sleep experts also recommend not using devices an hour before bedtime.
- Teach your children to pay attention to their surroundings - devices are the most dangerous distracting factors, especially on the roads. Even at home, it’s not funny when a child walks into a sharp corner of a table or bumps into someone who is carrying hot food. Safety first!
- Encourage personal communication, which helps children develop their social skills and connections.
Parents can also talk to their children about useful habits in the field of technology, share relevant articles and introduce them to new activities.
