Summer brings warmth and sunshine—but also... poplar fluff.

🧿 How Does Poplar Fluff Affect the Eyes?

  1. Mechanical Irritation
  • Fluff can enter the eyes, causing discomfort, redness, a foreign body sensation, burning, and excessive tearing.
  • This is especially troublesome for contact lens wearers, as the fluff can get trapped on the lenses.

2. Triggering Allergic Reactions

  • While poplar fluff itself is not an allergen, it can carry pollen from other plants (grasses, ambrosia, etc.), exacerbating allergy symptoms.
  • This can lead to allergic conjunctivitis, characterized by itching, redness, swollen eyelids, and tearing.

3. Worsening Chronic Eye Conditions

  • Individuals with chronic blepharitis, conjunctivitis, or keratitis may experience flare-ups due to irritation of the ocular mucosa.

🛡 Prevention and Eye Protection During Poplar Fluff Season:

  • Wear sunglasses to shield your eyes from airborne fluff and pollen.
  • Use moisturizing eye drops ("artificial tears") to wash out fluff particles and hydrate the ocular surface.
  • Rinse your eyes with saline solution after spending time outdoors.
  • Keep windows closed during peak fluff dispersal periods.
  • Consult an ophthalmologist for antihistamine eye drops if you suffer from allergies.

📌 When to See a Doctor:

  • If you experience severe redness, pain, vision deterioration, or purulent discharge.
  • If allergic conjunctivitis or flare-ups of chronic eye conditions are suspected.
