BURNS OF BOTH EYES BECAUSE OF A FIRECRECKER EXPLOSION IN HANDS
A 15-year-old boy from Voznesensk was transported by an emergency medical team to the ophthalmology hospital in Mykolaiv on January 21, 2025. He was discharged and referred to the Department of Pediatric Ophthalmic Pathology of SI "The Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of NAMS of Ukraine" with the following diagnosis: thermal burns of the face; right eye – 4th-degree thermal burns of the cornea and conjunctiva, with vision reduced to light perception. Objectively, the cornea was swollen, necrotically altered, with no corneal epithelium present, and appeared milky-white. The left eye sustained 2nd-degree thermal burns of the cornea and conjunctiva.
The injuries occurred during a firecracker explosion in his hands on January 19, 2025, at 7:30 PM. He had ordered five firecrackers online; four launched as fireworks, but one exploded in his hands and struck his face.
Thanks to the incredible professionalism of the doctors in the Department of Pediatric Ophthalmic Pathology of the State Institution "The Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine," led by MD, prof. Bobrova N.F., the patient’s eyes were saved, and his vision was restored.
