WHAT IS DROPPING OF THE UPPER EYELID?

Ptosis is when the upper eyelid droops over the eye. The eyelid may droop slightly or so much that it covers the pupil (the black dot in the center of the eye that lets in light). Usually this happens because the muscle-levator that lifts the eyelid does not work properly. Ptosis can limit or even completely block normal vision. There may be drooping of one or both upper eyelids.

Types of ptosis:

Congenital ptosis means that your child was born with this disease.

Acquired ptosis - this is when the upper eyelid droops over the eye in adulthood. This happens when the muscle that lifts the eyelid weakens from age or is associated with a number of diseases:

  • tumor around or behind the eye;
  • diabetes;
  • Horner’s syndrome;
  • myasthenia gravis;
  • cerebrovascular diseases;
  • eyelid swelling, for example, from barley.

Treatment of ptosis usually depends on how well the eyelid muscles function. If the disease does not affect your vision and appearance does not bother you, you may not need treatment at all.

You should see an ophthalmologist if ptosis affects your vision, appearance bothers you. Also if one eyelid suddenly begins to droop or close or if you have double vision and pain in your eyes.

We invite you for a consultation to the Filatov Institute. A highly qualified ophthalmologist will consider all your symptoms, not just problems with the eyelids. You may be asked about your past medical history (so it is advisable to bring all the medical reports you have), as well as family history of ptosis or hereditary diseases of the eyes and muscles. A complete eye examination will be performed, if necessary, blood test results will be requested and such visual studies as computed tomography or MRI will be prescribed.
