World Sight Day
World Sight Day, which is marked every week on the second Thursday of October, is the world event, brings attention to blindness and violations of vision. A significant celebration of this day was initiated by the SineFirstCampaign Lions Club International Foundation in 2000. It has since been integrated into VISION 2020 and coordinated by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO).
The main theme of World Sight Day 2023 is "Love Your Eyes at Work," focusing on healthy eyes at work. This day will be marked on October 12, 2023.
Many communities, associations and non-profit organisations are collaborating with WHO and IAPB to popularise this day with the following targets:
1) Raise public awareness of blindness and surveillance as major international health issues.
2) Have influence on governments, in particular the Ministry of Health, so that they participate in national blind prevention programs.
3) Enlighten the target audience on prevention of blindness, about VISION 2020 and its activities, as well as attract support of the VISION 2020 program.
According to WHO, the population of the world is getting older and people live longer, but blindness from chronic diseases is also growing. About 80 percent of 45 million blind people in the world are over 50. About 90 percent of blind people live in low-income countries, where older people, especially older women, face challenges getting needed medical care concerning eye problems.
However, many age-related diseases leading to blindness, such as cataract, refractive disorders and glaucoma, can be treated with positive results. Timely intervention can often delay or decrease their impact on vision.
