In an interview with The Pharma Media, Academician Vasyl Lazoryshynets, President of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, emphasised that today one-third of the Academy’s fundamental research and more than half of its applied research is devoted to military topics, supporting Ukraine’s defenders and introducing the latest treatment methods.

A significant contribution to the fulfillment of these tasks is also made by the SI “The Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of the NAMS of Ukraine” — a leading ophthalmic research center in the country. Since the beginning of the full-scale war, the Institute’s specialists have been providing highly specialised care to military personnel and civilian patients with severe eye  injuries, performing complex reconstructive procedures, developing and implementing modern methods of diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation.

The Filatov Institute’s research  school continues to work with the most relevant challenges of wartime ophthalmology, preserving and advancing the traditions of Ukrainian medical science. An important area of activity is interinstitutional scientific collaboration. In particular, specialists of the Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of the NAMS of Ukraine, in collaboration with researchers from the Institute of Thermoelectricity of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, have developed technologies for objective assessment of ocular heat exchange, which are of significant importance for the diagnosis, monitoring, and restoration of ocular function. Such interdisciplinary studies demonstrate the high potential of Ukrainian science and contribute to the implementation of innovative medical technologies in practical healthcare.

Thanks to institutions and research teams like these, the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine remains a powerful scientific and clinical center that integrates fundamental research with the real needs of the state and society.
