Retinopathy of Prematurity: Current Approaches to Diagnosis and Treatment

SI “The Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine” invites ophthalmologists and pediatric ophthalmologists working with premature infants to undertake a training courseon “Retinopathy of Prematurity” from July 6 to July 10, 2026 (32.0  academic hours).

The training program is aimed at deepening participants’ knowledge  of current approaches to the prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of retinopathy of prematurity—one of the most significant eye conditions affecting young children.

Over the course of five days, participants will have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with:

current data on the epidemiology of retinopathy of prematurity worldwide;

 the causes, mechanisms of development, and risk factors of the disease;

 the current international classification of retinopathy of prematurity;

 specific features of screening and diagnosis in premature infants;

 modern methods of treatment for retinopathy of prematurity;

 early and late complications of the disease;

 refractive disorders and squint in children born prematurely;

 clinical cases from the practice of leading specialists.

Lectures will be delivered by Serhii Volodymyrovych Katsan, MD, DSc, Medical Director and Head of the Center for Retinopathy of Prematurity, Prevention of Childhood Blindness and Visual Impairment.

Separate sessions devoted to refractive disorders and squints in older premature infants led by Iryna Mykhailivna Boichuk, MD, DSc.

A distinctive feature of the course is the combination of theoretical training with practical sessions, which will be held at the Odesa Regional Clinical Children’s Hospital and the SI “The Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine” using modern equipment.

Upon completion of the course, participants will receive certificates of the established format.
