On May 17, 2024, as part of the scientific-practical conference “Filatov Memorial Lectures 2024,” a master class on ocular trauma management was held. The goal of the master class was to teach young ophthalmologists the fundamental methods and techniques of primary surgical treatment for eye injuries, enhancing their professional competence and the quality of medical care.
Fifty-eight ophthalmologists from various medical institutions of Ukraine participated in the master class.
Event Program:
1. Introduction
Opening speech by the President of the Ukrainian Vitreoretinal Society, M. Umanets.
Brief description of the purpose and importance of the master class.
2. Theoretical Part:
- Classification of ocular globe injuries. Preoperative diagnostics. O. Sidak-Petretska.
- Specifics of suturing and knot-tying on the cornea. N. Ulyanova.
- Revising scleral injuries and suturing in the posterior pole. O. Sidak-Petretska.
- Approach to prolapsed ocular coats (cornea and/or sclera). I. Novitskyi.
- Management of open-globe injuries with intraocular foreign bodies. I. Gulko.
3. Practical Part
- Suturing the cornea on a wet swine eye macro-preparation. Participants performed under the guidance of trainer O. Ponomarchuk.
- Suturing the sclera on a wet swine eye macro-preparation. Participants worked under the supervision of trainer K. Mishchenko.
4. Conclusion
Summarizing the theoretical part. N. Ulyanova.
Discussion of postoperative care recommendations for ocular wounds.
Q&A session: Lecturers and participants discussed challenging clinical cases and questions arising during the master class.
