OCTOBER 30 – MEMORIAL DAY OF ACADEMICIAN V. FILATOV

Events
30.10.2023

Today, on October 30, we honor the memory of the greatest scientist and unique PERSON - academician Volodymyr FILATOV.

Volodymyr Filatov did not think about the future profession: of course, medicine is undoubtedly ophthalmology. After all, what could be more noble than fighting the most severe ailment of mankind - with blindness? The words that he exclaimed in his youth, seeing a blind man tapping his way with a stick: "Everyone must see the sun!" - became the motto of the whole life of a great scientist.

Volodymyr Filatov went far beyond ophthalmology in scientific researches. So, back in 1916, he proposed a fundamentally new method of plastic surgery - "round stem."

One of scientist's unique discoveries is a corneal transplant. He designed a trepan to carve thorn on his eye. At the same time, the question of the source of transparent tissue transplanted into the place of dissected thorn was solved. A cornea preserved in the cold of the eye was applied. Today, almost every ophthalmologist can do corneal transplant surgery.

Another outstanding Filatov's achievement is the tissue therapy method developed in 1933. The bottom line is that in a small piece of transplanted preserved cornea there are substances that contribute to the resorption of thorn. They help recovery with inflammation of the cornea if you "plant" a piece of preserved cornea. In fact, the academician discovered the mystery of biogenic stimulants and in practice proved that they introduced into the body contribute to recovery.

According to his students, even the hopeless patient, he never said no, believing that it was impossible to take the last hope from the patient. Therefore, he invariably answered:... "maybe in the future, science is developing."

He corresponded with patients. Letters to the institute asking for help were often addressed in the most bizarre way. For example, "Odesa. Polyclinic of Eye Operations"; "Odesa, Institute of Experimental Improvements"; "Odesa, polyclinic near the Black Sea"; "Odesa, chief paramedic by eyes"; "The Black Sea, Filatov."

He wasn't just teaching. Filatov's conversations with students often turned into real creative discussions, during which many ideas were born that served as a good start for new scientific developments. During his life, the academician brought up a lot of outstanding scientists, including academician N. Puchkovska, who led the institute after the death of V. Filatov for 29 years, professors: B. Brodsky, S. Kalfa, V. Voino-Yasenetsky, Z. Skrypnichenko, N. Shpak, S. Barkhash, A. Pakhomova and many others.

Eternal memory to our teacher academician Volodymyr FILATOV!
