On February 27, we celebrate the birthday of the outstanding Ukrainian scientist and ophthalmologist, Academician Volodymyr Petrovych Filatov.

His core life credo — restoring the ability of blind people to see light — made his name known throughout the world. Academician Filatov dedicated his life to the fight against blindness and the development of innovative methods for treating eye diseases. Thanks to his work, thousands of people were able to see the faces of their loved ones, the sun, the sky, and the world once again.

Volodymyr Petrovych Filatov was a pioneer in the following fields:

  • corneal transplantation;
  • reconstructive ophthalmology;
  • tissue therapy.

These approaches significantly improved the effectiveness of treating severe ocular pathologies and gave thousands of patients a chance for a full life.

The Odessa Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy, founded in 1936 by Academician Volodymyr Petrovych Filatov and now bearing his name, has become a place where a miracle happens every day — the restoration of vision. And this is perhaps the best tribute to the scientist.

Academician Filatov was not only a gifted physician, but also an educator, institution builder, scientist, and humanist. His works have been translated into many languages, and his scientific school has followers around the world.

✨ We remember and honor Volodymyr Petrovych Filatov, who devoted his life to light — both in the literal and symbolic sense.
