LABORATORY FOR PATHOMORPHOLOGICAL STUDY OF THE FILATOV INSTITUTE: CLINICAL, SCIENTIFIC, AND EDUCATIONAL MISSION

Science

The Laboratory for Pathomorphological Study has been operating since 1946 and has become an integral part of the diagnostic process in ophthalmology. More than 500,000 histological studies have been conducted for over 100,000 patients, highlighting its exceptional role in providing high-quality medical care.

📌 What does the laboratory do?

▪️ Examines biopsy and surgical material—ranging from the simplest tissue changes to complex oncopathologies.

▪️ Helps clinicians establish precise diagnoses and choose optimal treatment strategies.

▪️ Conducts consultative work with doctors from various departments, which is especially crucial for rare or complex cases.

📊 Who are the primary "suppliers" of materials?

🔹 Up to 80%—Ophthalmic Oncology Department

🔹 A significant volume comes from: Pediatric Ophthalmopathology Department, Eye Trauma and Burns Department, Corneal Pathology Department

🔹 Endovitreal surgery also makes a substantial contribution to research statistics.

🔍 Ocular pathology — a unique challenge:

The eye is a unique morphofunctional structure where tissues originate from all embryonic layers. This makes histomorphological diagnostics exceptionally complex and requires combined knowledge of general pathology, anatomy, histology, and ophthalmology.

🧠 Examples:

▪️ Diabetic retinopathy, glaucomatous changes, retinal neurodegeneration

▪️ Tumors not found in other organs: Retinoblastomas, Dictyomas, Specific types of intraocular melanomas

⚠️ Why is this important for Ukraine?

In the past, biopsy material was sent from all regions of Ukraine. Today, it comes only from a few hospitals in Odesa. Losing this collaboration could lead to clinical errors, delayed oncopathology diagnoses, and incorrect treatment strategies.

📚 What needs to be done?

▪️ Restore the practice of sending samples from different regions for histomorphological analysis.

🧪 Scientific activities:

The laboratory participates in fundamental and applied research. Notably, during 2025–2027, a scientific study is being conducted: "Features of Diagnosis and Treatment of Eye Melanomas in Wartime Conditions."

🧬 The Laboratory for Pathomorphological Study is more than just diagnostics — it is science, education, and clinical expertise that preserves vision.

Supporting this work is an investment in the quality of medical care throughout Ukraine.
