🌞 June 13 — European Skin Cancer Prevention Day!
This is an opportunity to remind everyone that skin cancer is one of the most treatable types of cancer, especially when detected early. In 95% of cases, the disease can be completely overcome!
📈 However, skin cancer rates continue to rise every year, particularly among young people. The main risk factor is ultraviolet (UV) radiation, whose effects may only become visible after 20 years. This is why skin protection from an early age is so essential.
👁🗨 The Department of Ophthalmooncology of SI "The Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of NAMS of Ukraine" plays a unique role in the fight against ocular oncological diseases.
Every year, over 1,500 patients receive treatment for complex conditions, including:
🔹 Eye tumors
🔹 Lacrimal pathway disorders
🔹 Endocrine ophthalmopathy
🔹 Post-traumatic deformities of the orbit, eyelids, and conjunctiva
👨🔬 The department:
🔬Developed innovative diagnostic and treatment methods for melanomas and other tumors of the eye and eyelids, including:
• Cryodestruction of eyelid and eyeball tumors
• Intra-arterial selective chemotherapy for comprehensive organ-preserving treatment
• Infrared pyrometer for diagnosis
• Adjuvant interferon therapy (light energy, brachytherapy)
• Laser coagulation, thermotherapy, brachytherapy
• Tumor diagnostics for lacrimal glands using tumor markers
• Application of radio wave surgery
• Impression cytology (rapid diagnostics for eye tumors)
• Radio-cryosurgery for malignant tumors of the eyelid and eyeball (radiation therapy + cryotherapy)
🔧 In collaboration with E.O.Paton Electric Welding Institute, innovative tools are being developed for work on the orbit and eyeball.
💡 The department is actively implementing:
• High-frequency electric welding for resection and enucleation
• Polymer-composite materials for tissue replacement
