JULY 8 — WORLD ALLERGY AWARENESS DAY
This day was established by the World Allergy Organization (WAO) and the World Immunopathology Organization (WIPO) to draw attention to one of today’s most widespread health issues — allergy.
🔹 What is an allergy? An allergy is an exaggerated response of the immune system to substances that are usually harmless for most people. These substances are called allergens. Common allergens include:
• pollen (pollinosis)
• household and domestic dust
• animal dander and fur
• food products
• medications and more
👀 The eyes are often a target for allergic reactions. The most common ocular forms of allergy include:
✔️ Allergic conjunctivitis (seasonal or perennial)
✔️ Vernal keratoconjunctivitis
✔️ Giant papillary conjunctivitis
✔️ Contact allergic dermatoconjunctivitis
Key symptoms may include:
✅ itching and burning
✅ eye redness
✅ tearing
✅ gritty or “sand-like” sensation
✅ eyelid swelling
💡 Important to remember:
🔸 If you experience allergy symptoms, consult an ophthalmologist or allergist.
🔸 Avoid self-medication — incorrect use of eye drops or antihistamines can worsen the problem.
🔸 Allergies can be managed effectively through proper diagnosis, treatment, and avoiding contact with allergens.
Take care of your eyes — and your overall health!
