July 22 – World Brain Day
Every year on July 22, the world observes World Brain Day, an international awareness initiative established by the World Federation of Neurology. Its main goal is to draw public attention to the prevention of brain diseases, early diagnosis of neurological disorders, and the importance of maintaining cognitive health throughout life.
This day is an excellent opportunity to highlight that advanced ophthalmology extends far beyond the diagnosis of eye diseases, playing an important role in the early detection of nervous system pathologies.
Current diagnostic methods, including optical coherence tomography (OCT), fundus examination, and angiography, make it possible to detect changes that may be associated not only with diseases of the visual system but also with brain pathology. Visual impairments are often among the first manifestations of stroke, multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, neurodegenerative diseases, as well as vascular and metabolic disorders.
In addition, an increasing number of scientific studies confirm the relationship between the condition of the retina and the development of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and other neurodegenerative processes. The analysis of structural changes in the retina is currently considered a promising non-invasive biomarker for the early diagnosis of brain diseases.
Therefore, one of the priority areas of current ophthalmology is the development of interdisciplinary collaboration between ophthalmologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, and functional diagnostics specialists. This approach enables the timely detection of pathological changes, improves treatment outcomes and preserves not only patients’ vision but also their quality of life.
At the SI “The Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of the NAMS of Ukraine,” scientific research is actively advancing, and modern technologies for diagnosing eye diseases closely associated with nervous system pathology are being implemented. Fundamental and clinical research, the use of high-tech imaging methods, and an interdisciplinary approach contribute to the early detection of pathological changes and increase the effectiveness of patient treatment.
On World Brain Day, specialists of the Filatov Institute remind: regular preventive examinations by an ophthalmologist help not only to detect eye diseases in a timely manner but also, in many cases, become an important step toward the early diagnosis of serious neurological conditions.
