International Biomedical Laboratory Science Day
International Day of Laboratory Diagnostics Specialists is celebrated worldwide on April 15— a day dedicated to the people whose work often remains "in the background" yet forms the foundation of modern medicine.
More than 70% of medical decisions are based on laboratory testing.
The accuracy of laboratory tests, attention to detail, and responsibility of laboratory professionals help save lives every day and support physicians in making the right clinical decisions.
The holiday was established in 1996 in Oslo by the International Federation of Biomedical Laboratory Science ( IFBLS )to raise awareness of the vital role laboratory diagnostics play in accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
A special role in this field belongs to the Clinical Diagnostic Research Group of the Laboratory Research Center at the The Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine — a team of professionals providing a wide range of highly accurate laboratory investigations.
The laboratory performs:
- haematological investigations — from complete blood counts to coagulation system assessment;
- general clinical laboratory investigations — urinalysis and specialized diagnostic methods;
- parasitological investigations — detection of helminths, protozoa, Demodex mites, and other infections;
- Biochemical blood tests include liver and kidney function tests, lipid profile, blood glucose level, and coagulation profile ;
- immunological investigations — markers of inflammation and infectious diseases.
Founded in 1936, the laboratory now operates using modern equipment and has participated in an international quality control system since 2008. Its primary mission is to support physicians in diagnosis, patient treatment, evaluation of therapy effectiveness, and disease prevention.
Importantly, research results are also widely used in the institute’s scientific research activities, as clinical laboratory diagnostics is a multidisciplinary field that combines practical medicine and science.
On this day, we express our gratitude to all laboratory diagnostics professionals for their accuracy, responsibility, and invaluable contribution to public health.
