Innovative Technology for Treating Choroidal Melanoma Stages T1–T3
🎉 Achievements of staff of the Department of Ophthalmooncology of SI "The Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine"!
🔬 Our specialists—DMedSc Poliakova S.I., Professor Maletskii A.P., Cand. of Med. Sc. Chebotaryov Ye.P., Cand. of Med. Sc. Tsukanova I.V. and Drumi D.A. — have developed an innovative combined approach using transpupillary thermotherapy (810 nm) and brachytherapy Sr90/It90 for treating choroidal melanoma stages T1–T3. This method significantly enhances treatment effectiveness while preserving patients’ quality of life.
🩺 What's the essence of the approach?
The method consists of four sessions of transpupillary thermotherapy followed by brachytherapy, which increases tumor radiosensitivity and maximizes the impact on residual tumor cells.
✅ Key advantages compared to existing technologies:
• Improved effectiveness in treating choroidal melanoma stages T1–T3
• Enhanced radiosensitization effect of brachytherapy
• Additional impact on the remaining tumor after irradiation
• Treatment effectiveness of 92.5%
• Individualized parameter selection for each patient
💡 What’s new?
This is the first technique to implement daily thermotherapy for four days with customized laser power settings (200 to 1300 mW), ensuring high accuracy and patient safety.
📈 Results:
An increase in positive clinical outcomes, fewer complications, improved vision quality, and preservation of the eyeball.
