On August 27, 2026, the presentation of the publishing and exhibition project “The Komarov Family: A Portrait Against the Background of an Era” organised by the Odessa Literary Museum, took place.

The event was attended by Dmytro Volodymyrovych Horshkov, Head of the Scientific Library of the V. P. Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy.

The project brought together a new book publication and a multimedia exhibition dedicated to the history of Ukrainian Odesa in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. At the center of the project is the Komarov family, which made a significant contribution to the development of Ukrainian culture, science, and bibliography.

Particular attention is devoted to Mykhailo Fedorovych Komarov (1844–1913) — a Ukrainian bibliographer, literary scholar, folklorist, lexicographer, and public figure — as well as to his son Bohdan Komarov (1882–1975) — a scholar, bibliographer, and custodian of the national cultural heritage.

The book “The Komarov Family: A Portrait Against the Background of an Era” is a study of the history of the Komarov family. The publication includes the results of academic research, archival documents, photographs and other materials.

The multimedia exhibition presents archival documents, photographs, correspondence, rare book editions, and contemporary multimedia solutions. Among the unique materials are Bohdan Komarov’s manuscripts, a digital copy of the 1913 issue of the newspaper Rada, and the four-volume “Russian-Ukrainian Dictionary” compiled by Mykhailo Komarov.

A valuable gift for the Filatov Institute’s Scientific Library

Two copies of the book *The Komarov Family: A Portrait Against the Background of an Era* have been donated to the Filatov Institute’s Scientific Library.

This is a valuable addition to the library’s collection, which will help preserve the results of research into the history of Ukrainian culture and Odesa. The book will be available to Institute staff, researchers, lecturers, interns, postgraduate students, and other readers.

The organisers highlight the special role of libraries in preserving and disseminating cultural memory. The handover of the publication to the library’s collection therefore formed an important part of the presentation.

For the Scientific Library of the Filatov Institute, this gift is of particular significance. The Scientific Library contributes to the preservation of the scientific and cultural heritage of our country and of the Filatov Institute.

The project was implemented by the Odesa Literary Museum with the support of the Partnership for a Strong Ukraine Fund. The Odesa National Fine Arts Museum served as the project mentor, while technical support was provided by the Odesa National Scientific Library.

The Scientific Library of the Filatov Institute thanks the Odesa Literary Museum for the invitation, its attention to the library community, and this valuable gift, which will become part of the library collection of the Filatov Institute.
