FILATOV INSTITUTE OPENS A NEW CHAPTER IN THE FIGHT AGAINST DIABETIC RETINOPATHY MEMORANDUM SIGNED TO ADVANCE PREVENTIVE MEDICINE IN COMBATING DIABETES COMPLICATIONS
The Regional Development Agency of Odesa Region, SI "The Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine", the CheckEye company, and MedCapitalGroup have signed a memorandum of cooperation in the field of preventive medicine and the implementation of innovative healthcare technologies.
The aim of this partnership is to create a modern model for the early detection of diabetes complications, particularly diabetic retinopathy—one of the most dangerous causes of vision loss.
The memorandum outlines the following key areas of cooperation:
Implementation of AI-based mass screening systems for diabetic retinopathy;
Organization of training programs for healthcare professionals;
Conducting informational and scientific-practical campaigns in communities across the Odesa region;
Promotion of preventive medicine among the population.
Special attention during the discussions was given to the development of international cooperation. The Filatov Institute already has substantial experience in partnering with leading global medical institutions. Notably, in 2025, a cooperation agreement was signed with the Oftacentro SA clinic (Lugano, Switzerland) to carry out joint research on the early detection of diabetic retinopathy, in collaboration with the CheckEye startup.
The signing of the memorandum marks an important step toward building a preventive healthcare system in the Odesa region. The combination of the Filatov Institute's scientific expertise, CheckEye's technological solutions, MedCapitalGroup’s medical expertise, and the project support of the Regional Development Agency creates a strong foundation for improving healthcare quality, early diagnosis, and public health outcomes.
This initiative is being implemented with the institutional support of the Swiss-Ukrainian project "UCORD – Cohesion and Regional Development of Ukraine," which is carried out with the support of Switzerland through the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and implemented by NIRAS Sweden AB.
