FEBRUARY 28 — WORLD RARE DISEASE DAY (ORPHAN DISEASES)
Every year, the last day of winter on the calendar is marked as Rare Disease Day — the World Day of Rare Diseases. The event is coordinated by EURORDIS — the European Organisation for Rare Diseases.
Most rare diseases:
- have a genetic origin;
- are serious, chronic and progressive;
- often begin in childhood;
- remain insufficiently studied.
Patients with rare diseases face numerous challenges in diagnosis and treatment:
- a long journey to establishing an accurate diagnosis;
- the need for consultations with highly specialized experts, who are mainly concentrated in specialized medical institutions;
- access to highly specialized medical care and individualized treatment approaches.
Specialists at the Filatov Institute have unique experience in diagnosing, treating, and providing long-term follow-up for people with rare ophthalmic diseases and systemic disorders affecting the visual organs.
A comprehensive multidisciplinary approach, genetic diagnostics, and early intervention can significantly improve the quality of life and prognosis in such cases.
