In the Department of Pathology of the Cornes and the Vitreous Body of the State Institution “The Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of NAMS of Ukraine”, a study was conducted on the change of the choroidal complex and the density of perfusion of the choriocapillaries in the macula in patients with idiopathic macular hole (IMH) before and after vitrectomy with peeling of the internal limiting membrane (ILM) according to classical or fovea-saving method.

The study included patients who had IMH stage II-IV according to D. Gass, underwent 25 Ga vitrectomy, ILM peeling by classical or fovea-saving methods and tamponade of the vitreous cavity with 20% SF6 or 15% C3F8.

Before the surgery and 1 month after it, the diameter of IMH, the area of the foveolar avascular zone (FAZ) in the deep plexus of the retina, the density of perfusion of the choriocapillaries (DPC) were measured.

71 eyes of 70 patients (15 men, 55 women) were operated, the mean age was 65.7 (SD 6.8) years, the mean duration of the hole was 3.0 months (Median) (Qlow-QUp - 1.0-6.0 months), the maximum corrected visual acuity (MCVA) before the operation was 0.19 (Median) (QlowQUp - 0.1-0.25), which was significantly (p=0.00001) lower than the MCVA of the paired eye - 0.92 (Median) (Qlow-QUp - 0.7 -1.0).
