EYES AND HEART: WHAT’S THE CONNECTION?

Events
06.07.2025

On July 6, we observe World Cardiologist Day, established by the World Health Organization in response to initiatives by both doctors and patients.

So, what ties cardiology and ophthalmology so closely together?

Our eyes can reveal a great deal about the condition of the cardiovascular system. In fact, an ophthalmologist is sometimes the first to detect signs of heart and vascular diseases—long before any other symptoms appear.

🔎 That’s why it’s crucial to know the key “crossroads” between cardiology and ophthalmology:

1️⃣ Arterial Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

  • Causes hypertensive retinopathy: retinal vessel narrowing, hemorrhages, and optic nerve swelling.
  • Risk: vision loss and stroke.

2️⃣ Atherosclerosis

  • Retinal blood vessels lose elasticity and circulation is disrupted.
  • May lead to ischemia and damage to ocular tissues.

3️⃣ Diabetes Mellitus

  • Diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of blindness globally.
  • Damaged retinal capillaries, macular edema, and abnormal blood vessel growth.

4️⃣ Stroke and Transient Ischemic Attacks (TIAs)

  • Temporary vision loss in one eye (amaurosis fugax) can be an early sign of an impending stroke.
  • Retinal vessel embolism is often linked to heart disease or carotid artery issues.

5️⃣ Retinal Vascular Thrombosis

  • Blockage of eye veins or arteries can result from arrhythmias or cardiogenic clots.
  • Requires immediate medical attention!

6️⃣ Glaucoma & Vascular Disorders

  • Insufficient optic nerve blood flow increases glaucoma risk—even with normal intraocular pressure.

7️⃣ Shared Risk Factors

  • Hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, and obesity are enemies of both the heart and the eyes.

✅ What can you do?

🔹 Monitor your blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol regularly.

🔹 Visit your ophthalmologist—even if you feel fine.

🔹 Don’t ignore sudden vision changes—they may signal a vascular emergency.

👁 The heart and the eyes work as a team. Take care of them both!
