EYELID CARCINOMA TREATMENT: MISTAKES THAT CAN BE AVOIDED
👁 Why is it crucial to consult an ophthalmo-oncologist when eyelid carcinoma is suspected?
🦠 Up to 98% of malignant eyelid skin tumors are carcinomas. Their deceptively “calm” progression often misleads even experienced specialists.
⚠️ Ophthalmologists from the Ophthalmo-Oncology Department of the V.P. Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine—
V.A. Yelagina, PhD in Medicine, I.O. Safronenkova, MD, O.S. Buiko, MD, Professor
conducted a research study illustrating the consequences of incorrect (inadequate or non-radical) treatment of eyelid carcinomas through real clinical cases, and offered recommendations for avoiding such outcomes.
🔎 The study described 9 clinical cases where delayed or inaccurate diagnosis led to serious complications—ranging from trichiasis to tumor invasion into the orbit and loss of vision.
💡 Key takeaways:
Treatment should be carried out by an ophthalmo-oncologist or oncologist in close collaboration with an ophthalmologist
Choosing the wrong treatment strategy can cost the patient their vision
If access to a specialized center is not possible, a joint consultation with an ophthalmologist and oncologist is essential
👁 The right treatment pathway = a chance to preserve vision and quality of life.
