Does Methanol Cause Irreversible Eye Damage?

Methanol intoxication leads to vision loss within 12-48 hours!

In cases of moderate poisoning, visual acuity is sharply reduced, and the peripheral limits of the visual field narrow. Temporary improvement in vision may occur, but it typically leads to complete blindness with optic atrophy. Examination of the fundus of the eye reveals hyperemia and blurred margins of the optic nerve discs, as well as venous dilation and hemorrhage. Visual disturbances can vary between both eyes: under full morning illumination, one eye may have visual acuity within the range of 0.1 to even 1.0.

Severe intoxication manifests with violent nausea, vomiting, and severe abdominal pain. Subsequently, the affected individual loses consciousness, experiences respiratory and cardiac dysfunction, and has decreased blood pressure. In some cases, clonic seizures may occur. Pupils are dilated, and there is no reaction to light. Severe intoxication often results in fatal outcomes within 1-2 days. If the course is favorable, essential bodily functions recover. However, irreversible ophthalmic disorders, including a sharp decrease in visual acuity and loss of central visual fields, may develop after one to two weeks. In 20% of cases, optic nerve atrophy occurs, leading to complete blindness.
