On April 8, 2026, a child born in 2022 was urgently admitted to the State Institution “V.P. Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine” with a diagnosis of grade I–II chemical burn of the conjunctiva and cornea of the left eye. The lower fornix of the left eye was particularly affected.

It was determined that the child accidentally squeezed the contents of a laundry detergent pod (specifically Ariel) directly into the left eye. Such cases represent one of the most dangerous types of chemical eye injury and require immediate medical attention, as aggressive chemical components can cause severe damage to the cornea and other ocular structures.

Thanks to the professionalism and many years of experience of the specialists of the Department of Microsurgical Treatment of Pediatric Eye Diseases, under the leadership of the Head of the Department of Pediatric Ophthalmopathology, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Nadiia Fedorivna Bobrova, intensive treatment was carried out. This allowed a positive outcome to be achieved and the condition of the eye to be stabilized without the development of severe complications.

Specialists of the Filatov Institute draw parents’ attention to the fact that laundry detergent pods pose a serious risk to children’s health. The high concentration of surfactants and alkaline components, upon contact with the skin, mucosas, or in case of accidental ingestion, can cause severe chemical injuries.

A particular danger is that, due to their bright colors and unusual shape, children often mistake detergent pods for candy or toys.

The Filatov Institute urges parents to follow safety rules:

• Keep laundry detergent pods and other household chemical products out of the reach of children;
• Never leave household chemicals unattended;
• In case of eye exposure to any substance, immediately rinse the eyes thoroughly with plenty of clean water and urgently seek specialized medical care.

Timely access to medical care and prompt treatment significantly reduce the risk of severe complications and help preserve the child’s health.
