COMPREHENSIVE DIABETIC EYE EXAM

Health
27.10.2023

Diabetic retinopathy is an eye disease that can lead to  vision loss and blindness in people suffering from diabetes mellitus. It affects blood vessels of the retina (light-sensitive layer of tissue in the posterior segment of the eye).

If you have diabetes, it is important to undergo a comprehensive eye examination with an extension of the eyes at least once a year. Initially, diabetic retinopathy may not have any symptoms, but its early presentation may help you take measures to protect your vision.

Comprehensive eye examination includes:

1. Visual acuity check. The doctor uses an ophthalmic chart to determine your overall vision and whether you need glasses/contact lenses or updates to your current prescription.

2. Tonometry. This test measures the pressure in the eye. High pressure can mean you are at risk of developing glaucoma, which has several types.

3. Retinal imaging. The imaging device allows the ophthalmologist to detect even very minor changes in the health of your eyes.

4. Eye exam with dilated pupils. After applying eye drops that dilate the pupils, the ophthalmologist will be able to examine the posterior segment of the eye to detect retinal edema, changes in blood vessels, nerve damage, lens pathology and other more serious eye diseases that are common in people with diabetes. This is the most important test for people with diabetes.

Admission is held in the office № 1 of the Consultative Polyclinic of the Filatov Institute by a doctor of the highest category, Cand. of Med. Sc. CHEREPENKO Anna.

Managing diabetes - maintaining physical activity, eating healthy and taking medication - can also help you prevent or delay vision loss.
