Commemoration Day of the Eminent Ophthalmologist Volodymyr Filatov
October 30th - the scientific community commemorates the day of remembrance of the eminent ophthalmologist Volodymyr Filatov.
Academician Volodymyr Filatov (1875–1956) made a tremendous contribution to the development of domestic and world science, primarily ophthalmology. Volodymyr Filatov is the founder of many methods of treating eye diseases, particularly the method of keratoplasty (corneal transplantation). He proposed the method for treating various diseases using tissue therapy, that is based on the use of biologically active substances contained in body's tissues. This method has found application not only in ophthalmology but also in other fields of medicine. Volodymyr Filatov developed the technique of creating the so-called "Filatov's stem". This method is used in plastic and reconstructive surgery today.
Academician Volodymyr Filatov founded the Research Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy (now State Institution "The Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine", which now bears his name and is a leading institution in the field of ophthalmology. The work and research of Volodymyr Filatov have helped and continue to help restore sight to thousands of people.
As a talented educator, Volodymyr Filatov established a scientific ophthalmological school that has a significant impact on the development of ophthalmology not only in Ukraine but worldwide. The school of Academician Filatov preserves and develops the scientific traditions laid down by its founder.
The contribution of Volodymyr Filatov to the development of science is remembered and honored worldwide.
