CAN ELEVATED BLOOD PRESSURE AFFECT EYE HEALTH?

Hypertensive disease (or arterial hypertension) can impact eye health due to changes occurring in blood vessels. High arterial pressure can lead to increased stress on vessels, including those that nourish the eye. This can result in various complications:

  1. RETINOPATHY: This condition occurs when elevated blood pressure damages the retinal blood vessels. It can lead to hemorrhages, swelling, and even retinal detachment.
  2. GLAUCOMA: Hypertension may also increase the risk of developing glaucoma—a condition characterized by optic nerve damage, often associated with elevated intraocular pressure.
  3. CATARACT: Although a direct link between hypertension and cataracts is not definitively proven, high blood pressure can elevate the risk of cataract development, especially in conjunction with other risk factors like aging.
  4. REDUCED VISUAL ACUITY: Elevated blood pressure can impair vision by damaging the retina or other eye structures.

Individuals with hypertension should regularly monitor their vision and seek medical attention to manage eye health. Proper management of blood pressure and timely visits to a doctor can help minimize the risk of these complications.
