Idiopathic macular hole (IMH) is a pathology of the central parts of the retina, characterized by disruption of the integrity of all layers of the retina (except for the retinal pigment epithelium) and accompanied by decreased visual acuity. This pathology occurs almost three times more often in women than in men and develops, as a rule, in the seventh decade of human life.
The study compared the effectiveness of fovea-sparing and classical methods of internal limiting membrane (ILM) removal in the surgical treatment of idiopathic macular holes (IMH) by the frequency and profile of IMH closure and final visual acuity.
This study was prospective, open, interventional and conducted in the department of pathology of the cornea and the vitreous body of the State Institution “The Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine”.
The inclusion criteria for the study were the presence of a macular hole of II-IV stage according to D. Gass, the ability to perform recommendations, the transparency of optical media; the exclusion criteria were previous vitrectomy in the history, myopia more than 6 diopters, the presence of wet form of age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and other vascular diseases of the retina and choroid.
