90 Years Dedicated to Vision: The Anniversary of the V.P. Filatov Institute
The V.P. Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine is celebrating a landmark date — April 4, 2026 marks the 90th anniversary of its founding.
One of the largest ophthalmological centers in Odesa and Ukraine, and one of the leading institutions in Europe, the V.P. Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy was established on April 4, 1936. Initially, the institution operated under the name Institute of Experimental Ophthalmology.
In its early years, the Institute became a center for pioneering research in corneal transplantation for corneal opacity. Scientists demonstrated the fundamental feasibility of such surgeries, developed effective surgical techniques, and created specialized instruments. These achievements laid the foundation for the development of modern ophthalmology.
In honor of the Institute’s 90th anniversary, commemorated on April 4, 2026, a commemorative medal was created. Its authors are Oleksandr Henadiyovych Artamonov and Mykhailo Yaroslavovych Dragomyretskyi — a lifelong friend of the Institute and a patient since childhood, whose personal story is closely connected with the institution’s work.
This date highlights not only the long history of the institution but also its significant contribution to the development of medical science both in Ukraine and far beyond its borders.
