In July 2026, the SI “Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of the NAMS of Ukraine” obtained registration for three technologies developed by the Institute’s researchers and specialists.

The new developments represent various areas of scientific activity — from oncological diagnostics and the early detection of diabetic retinopathy to a technology for the preparation of ophthalmic medicinal products.

1. A method for assessing the individual biological characteristics of tumours associated with factors relating to aggressive growth and the risk of metastasis, based on minimally invasive impression cytology followed by immunohistochemical examination.

The method involves obtaining impression cytology specimens from the surface of tumor tissue using porous cellulose acetate discs, followed by immunohistochemical determination of markers characterising the proliferative activity and aggressiveness of tumor growth.

2.A technology for the early detection of diabetic retinopathy based on the analysis of digital retinal fundus images, with the potential for use in telemedicine.

The technology is based on the use of a non-mydriatic fundus camera to obtain digital colour photographs of the fundus, including the macula and optic nerve. The images obtained are transmitted remotely to an operator to determine the presence, stage, and form of diabetic retinopathy.

Remote image analysis enables rapid diagnosis regardless of where the images were obtained and creates additional opportunities for the development of telemedicine technologies and the screening of patients with diabetes mellitus.

3.A technological procedure for reconstituting a concentrated aloe polysaccharide solution (active pharmaceutical ingredient, API) to the specified dose and isotonicity of the final preparation for incorporation into the finished dosage form of an ophthalmic medicinal product.

The technology consists in reconstituting a liquid concentrated of aloe polysaccharides (API) into the finished form of an ophthalmic medicinal product, specifically eye drops, while ensuring compliance with the established parameters: the quantitative content of the active ingredient and the osmolarity of the physiological solution.

From Scientific Researches to Practical Application

The registration of these three technologies is a significant achievement, scientific and innovative work of the Filatov Institute’s.

The developments cover promising areas of modern ophthalmology and demonstrate the potential of the Institute’s scientific achievements for further implementation in practical healthcare.
