Filatov Institute Achieves Scientific Milestone with Publication of International Research in a Prestigious Journal

Professor Andrii Korol, Deputy Director for Innovation and International Relations at the SI "The Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of the NAMS of Ukraine", has co-authored an international study focused on improving approaches to assessing the course and treatment outcomes of retinal diseases.

The study was conducted by a large international team of researchers from leading scientific and clinical institutions worldwide. The collaboration included experts from Italy, Singapore, Canada, the United Kingdom, Greece, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States. Ukraine was represented by the SI "The Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of the NAMS of Ukraine" (Odesa).

The study focuses on developing and validating a new approach to assessing clinical outcomes in patients with retinal diseases.

Traditionally, the effectiveness of treatment is determined by changes in visual acuity at specific points in time; however, this approach does not always reflect the actual dynamics of the disease’s progression.

The authors proposed using the "time-in-range" metric which makes it possible to assess the proportion of time during which a patient’s visual parameters remain within a functionally acceptable range. This approach makes it possible not only to assess the final treatment outcome but also to analyse the stability of the patient's condition and fluctuations in visual performance throughout the entire observation period.

The study demonstrates that the time-in-range approach is a promising and  can be implemented in clinical practice, particularly in the management of exudative retinal diseases. It also creates opportunities for more accurate comparisons of the effectiveness of different treatment approaches and enhances the quality of clinical research.

The importance of this work is driven by the growing need for more sensitive and informative indicators to assess the progression of ophthalmic diseases, which directly influences clinical decision-making and patient treatment outcomes.

The study has been published in «Eye», a leading international ophthalmology journal ranked in the first quartile (Q1) of its field. The journal has an impact factor of approximately 4.4 and serves as the official journal of The Royal College of Ophthalmologists, further highlighting the scientific significance and international recognition of the research.

The participation of a representative of the SI "The Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of the NAMS of Ukraine" in this study confirms the high standard of Ukrainian ophthalmological science and its active integration into the global research community.
