International Collaboration Continues: Researchers at the Filatov Institute have Published a New Study on Neovascular Glaucoma
Researchers of the SI “Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of the NAMS of Ukraine continue active international collaboration and present new results of joint findings in the field of advanced ophthalmology.
The Romanian Journal of Ophthalmology (2026; 70(2): 295–304) has published the results of a multicenter study conducted jointly with colleagues from Romania and the Republic of Moldova. This work marks another step in the implementation of scientific cooperation agreements with Grigore T. Pop University of Medicine and Pharmacy (Iași, Romania) and Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy (Chișinău, Republic of Moldova).
The study “Systemic Inflammatory and Microcirculatory Determinants of Long-Term Outcomes in Neovascular Glaucoma: A Multicenter Cohort Study” analyzed the treatment outcomes of 87 patients with neovascular glaucoma — one of the most complex and aggressive eye diseases, which often leads to irreversible vision loss.
The research team studied how treatment effectiveness is influenced not only by ophthalmological parameters but also by the overall systemic condition of the body, including the level of systemic inflammation and the state of microcirculation. Particular attention was paid to the stage of anterior chamber angle neovascularization, which, according to the results obtained, represents a key prognostic factor.
The study demonstrated that in the early stages of the disease, various treatment methods show high effectiveness, whereas disease progression is associated with significantly poorer outcomes. At the same time, better microcirculatory parameters are associated with a more favorable clinical course, while high levels of systemic inflammation, conversely, reduce the chances of successful treatment.
Researchers have succeeded in creating a combined prognostic model that allows highly accurate assessment of treatment outcomes for individual patient. This approach opens new opportunities for personalized medicine, in which treatment strategies are selected according to the individual characteristics of each patient’s condition.
The obtained results are changing the understanding of neovascular glaucoma as a disease that depends not only on local ocular changes but also on systemic processes in the body.
This study is a clear example of how international scientific collaboration contributes to the acquisition of new knowledge and the implementation of modern approaches into clinical practice.
