In the professional practice of an ophthalmologist, the issue of prismatic correction is often underestimated. However, it can significantly improve the quality of life of patients with binocular vision disorders, diplopia, heterophoria, squint, and a other pathological conditions.

For this reason, the SI “The Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of the NAMS of Ukraine” aims to draw the attention of the professional community to the monograph by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Vira Ivanivna Serdiuchenko “The Use of Prisms in Ophthalmology”. The monograph was published in 2024 and remains one of the most comprehensive Ukrainian publications devoted to to the subject of prismatic correction.

The monograph systematizes over  50 years of clinical experience in the use of prisms in ophthalmology. The author provides a detailed review of the principles of their action, indications for prescription, selection methods, possibilities for compensation of oculomotor disorders, development of fusional reserves, treatment of diplopia, as well as the use of prisms in asthenopia, nystagmus, optic nerve pathology, and visual field expansion in patients with hemianopia and retinitis pigmentosa.

This publication is especially recommended not only for ophthalmologists and pediatric ophthalmologists but also for optometrists. They are often the first specialists consulted by patients with complaints of double vision, rapid visual fatigue, discomfort during near work, or other manifestations of binocular vision disorders. During the initial examination, an optometrist can identify signs indicating the need for prismatic correction or referral of the patient to an ophthalmologist for further examination and treatment.

The monograph will also be useful for medical interns, postgraduate students, participants of continuing professional development courses, medical university students, as well as neurologists and neurosurgeons working with patients with diseases of the visual organ and central nervous system.
