Computer Vision Syndrome: Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis, and Prevention
Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) is a common functional disorder that develops as a result of prolonged use of computers, laptops, smartphone, or tablet. The condition is accompanied by eye fatigue, dryness, blurred vision, and general discomfort.
According to ophthalmological observations, more than 70% of people who work daily at a screen for over 4 hours a day have symptoms of computer vision syndrome.
Main Causes of Computer Vision Syndrome
- prolonged visual focus on a screen without breaks;
- reduced blink rate, which leads to dry eye syndrome;
- incorrectly prescribed glasses or contact lenses;
- insufficient workplace lighting or screen glare;
- incorrect posture and working distance;
- high visual load.
Symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome
Eye symptoms:
- eye fatigue;
- dryness, burning, or irritation in the eyes;
- eye redness;
- blurred vision;
- temporary decrease in visual acuity;
- sensation of “sand” in the eyes.
General symptoms:
- headache;
- neck and shoulder pain;
- fatigue;
- reduced concentration.
If symptoms persist for a long time, it is recommended to consult an ophthalmologist.
Diagnosis of Computer Vision Syndrome
Ophthalmological examination includes:
- visual acuity test;
- determination of refraction;
- evaluation of accommodation and binocular vision;
- examination of the tear film;
- analysis of the patient’s visual workload conditions.
Comprehensive diagnostics make it possible to select effective vision correction and preventive measures.
Treatment and Prevention
Recommended measures:
- following the 20–20–20 rule;
- optimal distance to the monitor 50–70 cm;
- proper workplace lighting;
- use of computer glasses;
- use of moisturizing eye drops as prescribed by a doctor;
- regular breaks and eye exercises.
