June 13 marks the European Skin Cancer Prevention Day, an initiative aimed at raising public awareness of the importance of early diagnosis and prevention of malignant skin tumours. For the Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of the NAMS of Ukraine, this date holds particular significance, as oncological diseases affect not only the skin but also the visual system and its supporting structures.

Specialists at the Filatov Institute have for many years been involved in the diagnosis and treatment of tumours of the eyelids, conjunctiva, orbit and intraocular tumours, among which malignant tumours pose a particular danger. Eyelid skin cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting the eye, and the early detection of pathological changes significantly improves treatment outcomes and preserves patients’ quality of life.

Researchers and clinicians of the Institute implement modern approaches to:

• early diagnosis of tumors of the eye and its adnexal structures;
• differential diagnosis of benign and malignant tumours;
• organ-preserving treatment of ocular oncological diseases;
• reconstructive surgery following tumor removal.

On European Skin Cancer Prevention Day, specialists of the Filatov Institute remind of the importance of:

✔ regular examination of the facial skin and eyelids;
✔consult a doctor if any new lesions appear or when existing lesions change in shape, color, or size;
✔ protecting the eyes and skin from excessive ultraviolet radiation exposure;
✔undergo regular check-ups, particularly if you are at increased risk of developing cancer.

Early diagnosis saves not only vision but also lives. Therefore, prevention and timely detection of tumors remain one of the key areas of the scientific and clinical activities of the Filatov Institute.
