This day is an important reminder for the whole world: cancer is not a sentence if diagnosed in time. Early diagnosis, modern treatment methods, and an interdisciplinary scientific approach help preserve not only life but also its quality.

The Department of Ophthalmic Oncology of the SI “The Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of the NAMS of Ukraine” has been a leading center in Ukraine for many years. It specializes in the diagnosis and organ-preserving treatment of malignant neoplasms of the organ of vision.

Research and clinical activities of the department

Specialists of the department conduct comprehensive research. The focus is on the role of cellular and humoral immune mechanisms in the treatment effect of organ-preserving therapy in:

• melanocytic neoplasms of the uveal tract;
• tumors of the eyelids and conjunctiva;
• orbital tumors.

Another area is the optimization of treatment tactics for patients with ophthalmic oncology pathology. It takes into account individual immunological and clinical features.

Innovations and unique developments

✔️ Engineering of original devices and surgical instruments for operations on the orbit and eyeball in cooperation with the E.O. Paton Institute of Electric Welding.

✔️ Development and implementation of the latest diagnostic and treatment methods, in particular:

• intra-arterial selective chemotherapy for intraocular melanomas;
• organ-preserving treatment using brachytherapy, light energy, and electron beam;
• adjuvant interferon therapy;
• radiofrequency surgery for melanoma of the iridociliary zone and choroid;
• transscleral and transpupillary thermotherapy, laser coagulation;
• use of markers of early and late lymphocyte activation;
• advanced methods for diagnosing and predicting recurrence of lacrimal gland tumors;
• endovitreous resection and enucleation of the eye using high-frequency electrocautery;
• the development of polymer composite materials for the replacement of soft and skeletal tissues.
