Department of Burn Pathology
It is world’s only specialized center for treatment of eye burns and their consequences, replacement flexible ophthalmosurgery, keratoplasty and keratoprosthesis.
The department was found by academician Nadiia Puchkivska in 1946.
The department includes:
- Ukrainian Eye Burn Center
- Department of Reconstructive Microsurgery of Post-burn Pathology of the Eye.
The main activities of the department:
- The research work of the department is aimed at studying the pathogenesis of burn disease; development of new and more effective methods of emergency care, medicamentous treatment, expanding the arsenal of eye surgeries of burn injuries and their consequences;
- The department is engaged in the development and application of different methods of keratoplasty (corneal transplantation) when eye burns and leucomas of burn etiology: transplantation of donor’s cornea, amnionplasty, xenoplasty, transplantation of corneal collagen analogues, study the effect of stem cells on repair processes in the affected cornea in post-burn period, etc;
- Developed and used various methods of plastic and cosmetic surgery of the eye and its adnexa;
- Plastic surgery techniques allow in all cases to achieve elimination of various post-burn and other diseases of the conjunctiva and eyelids, conjunctiva and orbital cavity and lacrimal pathways, improve or restore the cosmetic appearance of the damaged eye;
- Developed and applied various methods of keratoprosthesis of eyesore of burn and other etiologies, unsuitable for keratoplasty (corneal transplants);
- Features of the pathogenesis of secondary refractory glaucoma after rough post-burn changes of the anterior segment of the eye have been studied; methods of diagnosis and surgical treatment of this pathology have been developed;
- Treatment methods developed and applied at the Department enable in all cases to save or recover the sight loss as a result of burns of eyes.

The Division of Department of Reconstructive Microsurgery of Eye Burn Pathology works on the basis of the department.

Ukrainian Eye Burn Center uses unique methods of treatment for eye burns and their consequences:
- Developed by specialists of the division: emergency, therapeutic, tectonic keratoplasty (corneal transplantation) with the use of donor corneal, amniotic membrane, xenocornea, collagen analogues of the cornea etc.;
- Conjunctival plasty using local tissue (conjunctival and tenon membrane) and oral mucosa;
- Excimer laser phototherapeutic keratectomy;
- Auto-and allotransplantation of the limb (limb stemcells);
- Antiglaumatous drainage surgeries (scleral cyclogoniodraining, Ahmed valve implantation, etc.).
The specialists of the division perform restorative plastic surgeries for post-burn scars and eyelid deformations.
Optic keratoplasty (corneal transplantation) is used in post-burn leukomas and when it’s necessary – optic keratoprosthesis when eyesore that are unsuitable for optical keratoplasty.
More than 1000 keratoprosthesis surgeries were performed over the latest years that enabled to recover the vision to plenty of patients.
Other types of plastic surgeries are also used:
- Removal of scar eye deformation, lagophthalmos after injury, ocular pemphigoid;
- Elimination of spastic inversion and atopic eversion of the eyelid (when paresis of the facial nerve);
- Formation of the conjunctival and orbital cavity in anophthalmos with the following cosmetic prosthesis.
Cosmetic surgeries are performed:
- On the eyelids when blepharophimosis, blepharochalasis, ptosis, trichiasis;
- Teardrop surgery, teardrop disorder, dacryocystorhinostomy to eliminate teardrop.
In total more than 50 000 patients of near- and far-abroad were treated during the existence of the Department.
