For the first time ever, specialists of SI "The Filatov Institute of
Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of NAMS of Ukraine" conducted a unique
operation - removal of large-sized intraocular of choroidal hemangioma.
The patient, 21 years old, with Sturge-Weber syndrome and large-sized
hemangioma (chorioid) (12.2mm x 16.1 mm, vitreous length - 6 mm), which
increased over two years, developed exudative retinal detachment, which could
lead to the development of neovascular glaucoma with enucleation of eye.

Therefore, Institute's doctors decided to carry out an organ-preserving
unique operation: endoresection of neoplasm using high-frequency electric
welding of biological tissues (HEBT) according to author's methodology
developed together with the E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute of NAS of
Ukraine. They also developed tools necessary for conducting interventions.
The operation was carried out by DMedSc Mykola Mykolaiovych Umanets, Head
of the Department of Pathology of the Cornea and the Vitreous Body.
The operation was successful. It was possible to preserve the eye as an
organ, as well as the patient had spatial vision.
